LETTER FROM MARATHON DIRECTOR

Dear 2010 Amateur Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the premier marathon swim in the USA. The SWIM started in 1987 as an amateur relay across Long Island Sound as a fundraiser for cancer prevention, support and education programs. In the early 90’s, it became a swim race of the world’s best professional marathon swimmers.

During the late 90’s, amateur relays were introduced again to the SWIM alongside the professional swimmers. With the growth and popularity of amateur swimming, the SWIM decided in 2003 to go back to its roots with the re-introduction of an entirely amateur field, consisting of both relay teams and the world’s best amateur solo swimmers. This year, we are pleased to offer a new University Challenge Team Relay Category.

The 2009 SWIM was an outstanding event. The swim field featured 15 solo amateur swimmers, three two-person relays and 23 amateur team relays. Swimmers flew in from all over the country to participate.

More importantly, the 2009 swimmers raised more than $350,000 for the cancer prevention, education and support programs sponsored by St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound. This allowed the Foundation to reach its 2009 goal of $2.65 million for the year-long series of events falling under the SWIM umbrella.

We look forward to seeing you in Connecticut this August!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Fry
