More than 35 boats will set sail on Saturday, July 23, 2011 for the Annual Park City Regatta, hosted by Fayerweather Yacht Club in Bridgeport sponsored by Innovative Insurance and Mount Gay Rum. Other sponsors include BMW of Bridgeport, People’s United Bank and BCM Financial.
Presented by Fayerweather Yacht Club in Bridgeport, Black Rock Yacht Club in Bridgeport and Housatonic Boat Club in Stratford, the Regatta donated more than $20,000 last year to help the St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound turn the tide against cancer.
Sailing will take place outside Black Rock Harbor and can be viewed from St. Mary’s by the Sea. Racing divisions will be PHRF Spinnaker, Non –Spinnaker and One-Design, under Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association ratings (www.ecsa.net). The Regatta is joined by events scheduled in August, such as Martini Night at the Housatonic Boat Club, live and silent auctions held at the Regatta Picnic, and a separate premier auction in the fall at Black Rock Yacht Club hosted by Mary Daley and Nancy Gill.
The entry fee is $100 per boat, and each entrant will receive a skipper’s bag, T-shirt, hat, flag and five picnic wristbands. Additional bands are $5 each. Skippers and crews are encouraged to collect pledges for their boat, and boats raising additional money will be entered in a drawing for a special prize. All donations to the Regatta are tax-deductible.
“This is such a worthwhile cause that it is truly a pleasure to be involved,” said Regatta Chair Betsy Sorensen, RN, Case Manager for the Center for Geriatrics at Bridgeport Hospital. “It never ceases to amaze me how people hear about this event and truly reach out to support it.”
Helping people of all ages fight cancer is a very important cause for Sorensen, an Easton resident who lost her sister Jody Locke to ovarian cancer in 2001 and recently lost another sister, Nancy Burbridge of Hilliard, Ohio to breast cancer. “This regatta is a method by which competitive sailors, their friends and supporters can help” she said. “First, the donations made will help prevent the disease through early detection. Secondly, it provides support to current cancer patients with legitimate needs. And for some, it is a way to honor those who have gone before us.”
Last year, Sorensen sailed on George and Bev Gardner’s J80 “Wind Chime”. In past years, Tom and Catherine Bobbin’s J/30 “Special Sauce” had an all-female crew which was also the event’s top fundraiser. “We had a great time on the course with a bunch of gals who care...and sail,” said MaryEllen Tortorello of Greenfield Hill. “We did it for all the right reasons!”
After the Regatta, a fun picnic and party begins on the Fayerweather Yacht Club lawn.
